Arrival Information

Students are expected to arrive on campus on the date provided below. Dormitories will open on the morning of arrival day; early arrivals are not possible, nor are we able to accept luggage sent in advance for storage.

  • Non-degree 8-week session – Friday, June 22
  • Graduate 6-week session – Tuesday, July 3

Permission to arrive late must be requested in writing by email to chineseschool@middlebury.edu, and is granted by the Director of the school only when warranted by extraordinary circumstances.

Departure Information

Permission to depart early must be requested in writing by email to chineseschool@middlebury.edu, and is granted by the Director of the school only when warranted by extraordinary circumstances.

  • 8-week session – All 8-week classes end at noon on Friday, August 17. You may leave campus Friday after 12:00 p.m.
  • Graduate 6-week session – 6-week classes end on Wednesday, August 15. You may depart anytime after your last class.
  • Commencement will take place on Friday, August 17 at 4:00 p.m.

A student who must leave earlier than the schedule above must obtain prior permission from the Director.

·         Intensive 7-week session – Vermont only, Friday, June 29
·         Graduate 6-week session – Vermont only, Tuesday, July 3*
*Note: If you are a first-year MA or graduate non-degree student, please plan to arrive in time for a required meeting and reception to be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3.  Please contact coordinator Sheila Schwaneflugel at  sschwaneflugel@middlebury.edu before confirming your travel itinerary if your travel distance will make it unfeasible for you to arrive in time for this meeting. We may be able to arrange for you to be housed on campus Monday evening.

Departure Information:
The final banquet will take place the evening of Thursday, August 16. We welcome all students to participate in this celebratory tradition.
End of Classes:
·         Six-week, graduate-level classes end on Wednesday afternoon, August 15.
·         Seven-week, undergraduate-level classes and exams end on Thursday afternoon, August 16.

Students may leave as soon as their classes and final exams are completed; however we encourage all to remain for the banquet.

A student who leaves earlier than the schedule above without express permission of the Director will receive a grade of WD/F.  

All dormitory rooms must be vacated by Saturday, August 18 at 10:00 a.m.
Graduate Commencement (MA and DML) will take place Friday, August 17 at 4:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall at Mahaney Center for the Arts.  All are invited to attend the ceremony, however tickets will be required and only three tickets will be issued for each graduating student.  Overflow viewing space will be provided.  A reception for all graduates and their guests will follow the ceremony.  Further details will be available in June.
What should I bring?
You may want to bring musical instruments, costumes, one “fancy” outfit for the final banquet and if you’ll perform in the choir concert or musical recital, please consider bringing black pants or skirt, a white shirt and appropriate shoes. Sports equipment and clothing such as soccer cleats, a tennis racket, running gear, golf clubs, light hiking shoes or a bike for getting around campus are also welcome. If you plan to participate in the optional weekend excursion to Montreal, you will need a valid passport (all participants) and a visa for Canada (non-US citizens- check with your Canadian Consulate). Details about the trip will be sent by your coordinator in May.

German School

  • 7-week session – Classes end by 1:00 pm on Thursday, August 16
  • 6-week session – Classes end on Wednesday, August 15

Even though students may depart anytime after their last class and after they have fulfilled all their obligations for their courses, keep in mind that the closing ceremony and banquet take place on Thursday evening, August 16.

All students must vacate the dorms by Saturday, August 18 at 10:00 a.m.  Students must take all of their belongings with them. Neither the German School nor Middlebury College will be able to store belongings after the dorms close.

A student who leaves earlier than the schedule above without express permission of the Director will receive a grade of WD/F.

Commencement for German graduate students receiving their MA in August 2018 will be on Friday, August 17 at 4:00 p.m.

Final exams will be given on Thursday, August 16, and classes will end later that day. On Thursday evening, students, faculty, and staff will attend a closing ceremony and banquet. Students may depart any time after their final exams and must vacate their dorm rooms by noon on Saturday, August 18. Most will depart on Friday, August 17.
A student who leaves earlier than the schedule above without express permission of the Director will receive a grade of WD/F.

What must I bring?

Consider bringing a musical instrument, athletic gear, hiking boots, swimwear, a bike, dance shoes, costumes or props for our Russian Fair and Russian Song Night. Some students dress up for concerts, the theater performance, and the final banquet.

Graduate classes end on Wednesday, August 15, with the closing ceremony and banquet on Wednesday evening.  Final exams for the 7-week students will be held on Thursday, August 16; 6-week students do not have required activities following the banquet on Wednesday evening.

A student who leaves earlier than the schedule above without express permission of the Director will receive a grade of WD/F.

Students may depart any time after their final exams but must vacate their dorms by 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 18.

What should I bring?

You may want to bring musical instruments, dance shoes or anything else you might use in a talent show and some sort of costume for the baile de disfraces, or costume ball.
